Re Root Canal Treatment
Root canal treatment

Root canal treatment (endodontics) is a dental procedure used to treat infection at the center of a tooth.

Here at Sevenoaks Dental & Implant Centre, all our team are highly trained, and our focus is on preventive dentistry. Preventive dentistry aims to keep your mouth healthy and limits the amount of dental treatment you require. The two main causes of tooth loss are decay and gum disease. The better you prevent or deal with these two problems, the more chance you will have of keeping your teeth for life.

Root Canal Treatment in Sevenoaks

Root canal treatment is a dental procedure used to treat infection or inflammation affecting the inside of a tooth. At Sevenoaks Dental & Implant Centre, root canal treatment may be recommended when the dental pulp inside a tooth has become damaged or infected and the tooth may otherwise need to be removed.

Root canal treatment, also known as endodontic treatment, is intended to remove the affected tissue, clean and disinfect the inside of the tooth and seal it to help protect the tooth from further infection.

If you have persistent toothache, sensitivity, swelling or other symptoms affecting a tooth, a dental examination can help determine the cause and whether root canal treatment may be appropriate for you.

What Is Root Canal Treatment?

Inside each tooth is a space containing dental pulp, which includes nerves and blood vessels. If the pulp becomes inflamed or infected, it can cause pain and may eventually lead to an infection around the root of the tooth.

Root canal treatment involves accessing the inside of the affected tooth, removing the damaged or infected pulp and carefully cleaning the root canal system. The canals are then prepared and sealed to help prevent bacteria from entering again.

The tooth can then be restored to help return it to useful function and protect the remaining tooth structure.

Why Might You Need Root Canal Treatment?

Root canal treatment may be considered when the pulp inside a tooth has become irreversibly inflamed or infected.

Possible causes include:

  • Deep tooth decay
  • A large or failing filling
  • Cracks or damage to a tooth
  • Dental trauma
  • Repeated dental procedures on the same tooth
  • Infection affecting the tooth

Not every toothache requires root canal treatment. Your dentist will assess your symptoms, examine the tooth and may use dental X-rays or other diagnostic tests before recommending appropriate treatment.

Benefits of root canal treatment

Relieves toothache – by removing the infected pulp and nerve you can be pain free.
Saves your tooth – if left untreated the infection will spread and in the long term this would mean that the tooth would need to be extracted.
Improves your oral health – Undergoing root canal treatment is a proactive way to protect your wellbeing and maintain a beautiful smile.
